Wu Wei Zi

Schisandra FruitSchisandra chinensis

A small red berry that gathers and holds: it keeps Qi, fluids and Essence from leaking away and settles the Spirit.

Wu Wei Zi is the dried fruit of the schisandra vine, prized in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its gathering, astringing quality. It tonifies Qi while helping the body hold on to what it needs: breath, sweat, fluids and Essence. Zoi includes it in six formulas, from Sleep | Kÿma™ and Brain + Mood | Xýlo™ to Resilience | Fós™ and the Lung, Heart and Liver Meridian™ formulas, because it calms the Heart and Spirit while supporting the Lungs and Kidneys.

Best functions

  • Tonifies Qi and helps contain Lung Qi, traditionally used to quiet a cough
  • Tonifies the Kidney and binds Essence (Jing)
  • Astringes sweat and generates fluids
  • Quiets the Spirit and calms and contains Heart Qi
  • Animal research has looked at its calming effects on sleep and on stress hormone levels

Fascinating facts

  • Noa's notes call Wu Wei Zi the only herb that holds all five tastes: sour, sweet, bitter, pungent and salty. That is where its name comes from, since Wu Wei Zi means "five flavor fruit."
  • Schisandra is a woody climbing vine native to northern China, Korea and the Russian Far East. In late summer it hangs heavy with clusters of small, bright red berries, and the dried berries are the part used.
  • In Korea the berry is called omija, and people steep it into a tart, rosy tea or a chilled summer drink.
  • Zoi's fact sheets describe Wu Wei Zi as entering all five Zang organs, which helps explain why it turns up in formulas for sleep, mood, resilience, the Lungs, the Heart and the Liver.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine

Warm in nature, Wu Wei Zi carries all five flavors: sour, sweet, bitter, pungent and salty. It is an astringent herb that enters the Heart, Kidney and Lung meridians, and is described as reaching all five Zang organs.

Key active constituents

  • Schisandrol B, named in cited liver studies in mice (Jiang et al., Toxicol Sci 2015)
  • Schisandrin, named in a cited lung-injury study (Sun et al., Front Physiol 2018)
  • Schisandra lignans, named in a cited anxiety study (Chen et al., Phytomedicine 2011)
  • An acidic polysaccharide (sugar chain), named in a cited liver study (Che et al., J Pharmacol Sci 2019)

Pharmacology and mechanisms

  • Schisandra fruit is one of the Liver Meridian herbs shown to protect the liver, including raising glutathione (the body's master antioxidant).
  • In Lung Meridian, it is one of the herbs with strong anti-inflammatory action specific to the respiratory tract.
  • Schisandra may regulate neurotransmitters and positively affect corticosterone, a stress hormone.
  • As an adaptogen (stress-adapting herb), it has neuroprotective and antidepressant effects.
  • Schisandrin B is hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) and induces phase II detoxification enzymes. Noa’s notes
  • Adaptogenic: modulates the stress response and HPA axis, reduces cortisol, and improves physical and mental performance. Noa’s notes
  • Neuroprotective: inhibits acetylcholinesterase and promotes NGF (nerve growth factor). Noa’s notes
  • Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and supports mitochondrial (cell energy) production. Noa’s notes

What the research says

  • In mice and rats, schisandra extracts were sedative, reduced motor activity, prolonged sleep and shortened time to fall asleep (Huang et al., J Ethnopharmacol 2007).
  • In animals, schisandra protected the liver from acetaminophen damage and lowered ALT and AST, liver-stress markers (Che et al., J Pharmacol Sci 2019; Jiang et al., Toxicol Sci 2015).
  • A schisandra fruit extract with sesamin improved liver function in humans (Chiu et al., Phytother Res 2013).
  • Schisandra reduced alcohol-related fatty liver and lowered cholesterol and triglycerides in rats (Park et al., J Med Food 2014).
  • Schisandrol B supported liver regeneration after partial liver removal in mice (Li et al., Eur J Pharmacol 2018).
  • In asthmatic mice, schisandra lowered airway hyperresponsiveness (twitchiness), IgE levels and immune cell infiltration (Hyungwoo et al., Pharmacogn Mag 2014).
  • Schisandrin eased lung injury in an animal model (Sun et al., Front Physiol 2018).
  • A standardized schisandra lignan extract had an anti-anxiety effect in stressed mice (Chen et al., Phytomedicine 2011).
  • With Siberian ginseng, rhodiola and ashwagandha, it extended lifespan in stressed animals and supported memory; it reversed cognitive impairment in animals (Wróbel-Biedrawa and Podolak, Molecules 2024).

Safety, interactions and cautions

  • Every Zoi fact sheet: do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding unless directed by your health care practitioner.
  • The Brain + Mood | Xýlo fact sheet advises anyone with a medical condition or taking medication to consult their doctor before use.
  • The Resilience | Fós fact sheet advises anyone with a medical condition or taking medication to consult their doctor before use, and to take it earlier in the day if it interferes with sleep.
  • Inhibits CYP3A4 (a drug-processing liver enzyme), so it may interact with many medicines; check interactions for each patient. Noa’s notes
  • Avoid in excess Exterior conditions (common cold, flu), early-stage cough, rashes that need venting, and excess Heat patterns. Noa’s notes
  • Use caution in early stages of infection. Noa’s notes
