Fu Ling

Poria MushroomPoria cocos

A pale, gentle mushroom that drains excess water, strengthens digestion, and settles a restless Heart and Spirit.

Fu Ling is a mushroom that grows underground, and it is one of the mildest and most widely used herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It helps the body let go of extra fluid while supporting the Spleen, the organ system at the center of digestion. Its quiet, steadying nature lets it fit into many Zoi formulas, including Metabolic Balance™, Longevity | The Zoi™, Kidney Meridian™, and Spleen Meridian™.

Best functions

  • Used to promote urination and leach out Dampness
  • Strengthens the Spleen and harmonizes the Middle Jiao, the digestive center
  • Traditionally quiets the Heart and calms the Spirit (Shen)
  • Used to soothe the nerves
  • Research has looked at its polysaccharides for their effects on the immune system and on blood sugar balance

Fascinating facts

  • Poria grows underground on the roots of pine trees and forms a dense, knobby mass with a brown, bark-like skin.
  • In Beijing, Fu Ling is a traditional snack ingredient, folded into thin, crisp pancakes with a sweet filling.
  • Fu Ling turns up in almost every classic formula. It is one of the most familiar faces in traditional Chinese herbal recipes.
  • Zoi's notes point to beta-glucans in Poria, called pachymaran, which researchers have studied for their effects on the immune system.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine

Fu Ling is neutral in nature with a sweet flavor, and it is known as a Dampness-resolving herb. It enters the Heart, Spleen, Kidney, and Lung channels.

Key active constituents

  • Polysaccharides (long sugar chains): the Longevity sheet's reference list cites a Poria cocos polysaccharide study, though its text does not discuss it

Pharmacology and mechanisms

  • In Spleen Meridian, Poria is grouped with Codonopsis and Atractylodes as herbs shown to lower fasting blood sugar and serum insulin.
  • Beta-glucans (pachymaran) are immunomodulatory and activate dendritic cells (immune 'scout' cells). Noa’s notes
  • Antitumor activity; used alongside conventional oncology care in Japan (Krestin / PSK). Noa’s notes
  • Diuretic and nephroprotective (kidney-protecting); supports renal tubular function. Noa’s notes

What the research says

  • Studies have shown Poria cocos to significantly reduce fasting blood glucose and serum insulin (Rios, Planta Med 2011).
  • The Kidney Meridian sheet groups Poria with Rehmannia formulas as studied for osteoporosis (bone thinning) in over 100 clinical studies.
  • Poria eased bone loss in ovariectomized mice and inhibited osteoclast formation (cells that break down bone) in the lab (Hwang et al., Nutrients 2020).

Safety, interactions and cautions

  • Every Zoi fact sheet: do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding unless directed by your health care practitioner.
  • The Metabolic Balance fact sheet cautions that the formula may be contraindicated with prescription blood thinners or anti-diabetic drugs.
