Sha Ren

Black CardamomAmomum villosum

A warm, aromatic seed pod that gets digestion moving, clears heavy Dampness, and warms the belly from the center.

Sha Ren is a fragrant, warming fruit that Traditional Chinese Medicine uses to look after the Spleen and Stomach, the body's digestive center. When digestion feels heavy, slow, or soggy, Sha Ren's aroma is used to move Qi and lift that Dampness. That is why it appears in Zoi's Digestive Relief | Édafos™, Spleen Meridian™, and Metabolic Balance™ formulas.

Best functions

  • Promotes the movement of Qi through the digestive center
  • Aromatically transforms Dampness, the heavy, sluggish feeling in digestion
  • Strengthens the Spleen
  • Warms the Middle and is traditionally used to settle loose stools

Fascinating facts

  • Sha Ren belongs to the ginger family, so it is a botanical cousin of ginger, turmeric, and green cardamom.
  • The part used is the small dried fruit, which is full of tightly packed, highly aromatic seeds.
  • In Traditional Chinese Medicine its fragrance is part of how it works. It is described as 'aromatically' transforming Damp, as if its scent cuts through heaviness.
  • Sha Ren is pictured as a herb that 'opens the Middle Jiao.' The Middle Jiao is the central part of the body where digestion takes place in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine

Sha Ren is warm, pungent, and aromatic. It is an aromatic herb that enters the Spleen and Stomach channels.
