Bai Zhu

White Atractylodes RhizomeAtractylodes macrocephala

A warm, earthy root that builds digestive strength and Qi while drying out the soggy heaviness of Dampness.

Bai Zhu is a cornerstone herb for the Spleen and Stomach, the organ systems Traditional Chinese Medicine places at the heart of digestion and energy. It is used to build Qi and to dry Dampness, the heavy, waterlogged feeling that can slow the body down. It appears in five Zoi formulas, including Metabolic Balance™, Women's Health | Ríza™, Digestive Relief | Édafos™, Lung Meridian™, and Spleen Meridian™.

Best functions

  • Used to tonify the Spleen and augment Qi
  • Traditionally dries Damp and promotes healthy water metabolism
  • Stabilizes the Exterior and stops excess sweating
  • Studies suggest it may support stomach comfort, digestive movement, and blood sugar balance

Fascinating facts

  • Bai means white in Chinese, which sets this herb apart from its cousin Cang Zhu, the darker Atractylodes.
  • Atractylodes belongs to the daisy family and has thistle-like purple flower heads, but the part used is the knobby underground rhizome.
  • Bai Zhu has a fond nickname, 'the Spleen's best friend.' In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is pictured as the herb that holds the center steady.
  • Bai Zhu shows up in five Zoi formulas and holds the number two spot in Spleen Meridian™, which shows how central it is to supporting digestion.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine

Bai Zhu is warm in nature, with a bitter and sweet flavor. It is a tonic herb that enters the Spleen and Stomach channels.

Key active constituents

  • Polysaccharides (long sugar chains), named in a cited rat study on liver protection (Jin et al., Am J Chin Med 2011)

Pharmacology and mechanisms

  • In Spleen Meridian, Atractylodes is grouped with Codonopsis and Poria as herbs shown to lower fasting blood sugar and insulin.
  • Some studies indicate Atractylodes stimulates mitochondrial function (the cell's energy engines) and muscle energy metabolism.
  • It is one of the Digestive Relief and Metabolic Balance herbs with liver-protective effects in studies.
  • Supports blood glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity. Noa’s notes
  • Immunomodulatory: increases T-lymphocyte and NK (natural killer) cell activity. Noa’s notes
  • Gastroprotective (stomach-protecting) and prokinetic: promotes gastric motility and reduces GI inflammation. · Noa’s notes

What the research says

  • Atractylodes significantly reduced fasting blood glucose and serum insulin in some studies (Song et al., Int J Mol Sci 2018).
  • In animal studies, Atractylodes reduced body weight gain, serum lipids and insulin, and improved glucose tolerance (Song et al., Int J Mol Sci 2018).
  • Atractylodes improved glucose and lipid metabolism in muscle cells through mitochondrial regulation (Song et al., Evid Based Complement Alternat Med 2015).
  • An Atractylodes macrocephala polysaccharide protected the liver from ischemia-reperfusion injury (damage when blood flow returns) in rats (Jin et al., Am J Chin Med 2011).

Safety, interactions and cautions
